With Mardi Gras 2017 theme being “Creating Equality”, we decided to use the pink triangle as the basis of graphic design throughout our BE festival, and as a prominent feature in our BE21 logo.
The pink triangle has its roots in Nazi Germany where homosexual men were discerned from the other prisoners with this pink triangle on their jackets and were tattooed on them. However, gay men have reclaimed this symbol for themselves, and its modern usage is to symbolise gay pride and gay rights. As gay men have reclaimed this symbol and given it new meaning, we, as a group, have created a way of moving equality forward and making it visible.
Placing the HCB Paw in a pink triangle shows that the bears are behind any movement toward equality and equal rights.
